On the record, I have nothing against using character managers, including the built-in character sheets installed into Roll20. The newer version that is SRD friendly is all but perfect to use once you learn how to use it.
However, I don't rely on any character manager or even fill in Character sheets, and it's apparent to why. There are options I use here that are not coded into any character manager or will fit into any form character sheet, including the ones created by Wizards of the Coast. That's the reason why, when I made my own character creation tutorial, suggested that you eschew all that and use Microsoft Word or One Note.
But Roll20 has another feature which I do use a lot of: Macros. They're a bit tricky to use at first, and I'd suggest that you look at Roll20's help wiki for a more versed tutorial. What I'll put here is a quick walkthrough to get you started.
When you enter the Roll20 Tabletop, go to the "Hamburger" icon on the sidebar to your right, numbered (1) on the graphic, that will bring you to the Macros tab.
You can add a Macro with the "+ Add" button, (2), which will open an input window.
Make a unique name at (3), don't worry about spaces; they'll turn into dashes on the name.
Input your macro in the big field, (4). More on that after all these direction-showing.
With some macros, you want them to be token dependent, especially with Initiative rolls. In this case, make sure that the checkbox at (5) is on.
When you're finished, click on "Save Changes," and your new macro appears in the Macro List, (6), where you can click on the name to revise your macro, or click on whatever you want the macro in its own quick bar. Oh, if you're doing this, make sure that the checkbox for said quick bar, (7), is on.
Finally, to reveal Token Actions, just click on your token on the table, and your Token Action Macros will appear on the top of the screen, (8).
That's how you use Macros in Roll20, now for some sample macros to get you started.
Initiative Rolls : probably the first use you have for Macros. This one is a token action so be sure to click that "Show as Token Action?" checkbox on as you put this into the field: /roll 1d20 + 5 &{tracker}
Be sure to replace the 5 in that above macro with your Initiative Bonus, usually your DEX.
The main three rolls : I usually set up these three Macros next, one each for a Standard, Advantage, and Disadvantage rolls. These macros open up an input box for your modifier. A head's up here: You don't need to add a + for positive modifiers, but you'll have to put in a – for negative ones:
Standard Roll: /roll 1d20 + ?{Modifier|0}
Advantage Roll: /roll 2d20k1 + ?{Modifier|0}
Disadvantage Roll: /roll 2d20kl1 + ?{Modifier|0}
These four macros are the core list that I need in any table. I hard type my dice rolls for everything else. Eventually I'll figure out which sequence of dice rolls I find myself doing all the time and make macros for these sequences. I encourage you to do the same, especially now that I've showed you how to make it. You might need to read up on the /roll command (Protip: There's a tutorial in Roll20's Wiki ) and remember that not only can you can use /me
commands to add text to any macro, but you can put the dice rolling in double brackets (blah blah blah 2d6 whatever
) if you want to put that dice roll in a text line. Note that I did not add the '/roll' part in that double bracketed dice roll. Go and do likewise.
