How to Make a Origami Cornucopia

Welcome to Fine Motor Friday! Caden hadn't been interested in playing on the light box for some time. So we put it away while I thought of fun and new ways to encourage him to use it. Then I thought doing a craft on the light box would be fun! And with Thanksgiving right around the corner I incorporated a little Thanksgiving element into a fun craft and make a tissue paper cornucopia craft on the light box!

Tissue paper is a new craft material for us. I love how easy it is to use! I had originally bought it to use with contact paper to make cute little suncatchers! But then I couldn't find the contact paper that I thought I had and went with the alternative – wax paper!

So to make this craft you need:

• a sheet of wax paper
• some clear tape
• a permanent black marker
• squares of colored tissue paper
• glue

First I found a simple black line image of a cornucopia that I liked on the internet and printed it off. Then I taped the image to the back of the wax paper with the image facing the wax paper. Make sure you use enough tape so that the image doesn't shift around while you are tracing. I also taped the wax paper down on a board so that it wouldn't roll up on me while I was tracing. I then traced the image using a black permanent marker.

Once you are done tracing your image on to the wax paper you can remove the printed image and tape the wax paper down on the light box. Caden helped to apply the glue to the wax paper. We used a glue stick because it was handy, but any type of glue should work.

Caden had a good time sticking the tissue paper squares on the cornucopia. But needed some encouragement before he really got into it. When he was finished, I cut off the excess was paper from around the cornucopia and taped it to the window.

We really enjoyed this craft! It's a fun way to practice fine motor pinching skills and hand-eye coordination. It is also so quick and easy to set up! The only thing I would do differently is retrace the outline of the cornucopia so that they are darker and stand out more. And Caden might enjoy a different image more, like a Transformer or something. 😉
